| HAITI: SOUNDNESS OF MIND A Patrick Jerome Story Amily Bradley, an American radio journalist in her late 20's, goes to Haiti from Boston in early 2002 to cover news in the country. There she interviews Yvon Christophe, a politician in the Haitian parliament, who has been accused of being a corrupt politician, a drug dealer, a thief and a criminal. Yvon asks out Amily, and the two become close. Yvon introduces Amily to a lifestyle of luxury, filled with expensive cognac, bags of cash, drugs and decadent times on Haiti's beautiful beaches. Amily quickly gives up on an eight year old relationship she had in the US with a Vietnamese American man, as well as a secret female lover. She embraces her new relationship, and she becomes Yvon's lover. At the same time, rebels start marching toward the capital, Port-au-Prince, to overthrow President Jean Bertrand Aristide. Yvon goes into hiding to avoid being captured. Amily provides shelter for Yvon in her apartment, and they live together while the country is in turmoil. However Yvon is married, and Danika Christophe, Yvon's wife, wants her husband back. Amily is determined to keep Yvon, regardless of Danika's wishes. A series of unpredictable events take place, which put into question Haiti's current state of politics, race relationships, corruption, crime, and drugs. Soundness of Mind unfolds in this dramatic and passionate story. |
